The Letters

as always, Suzanne Woods Fisher has written a wonderful story that while it isn't without its struggles is still full of hope and love! I'm a big fan of Woods-fisher's books so I was immediately excited to review this book! I love the simplicity of the Amish fiction genre and love to learn about a culture that is so different from out own!
In the book "the Letters" we're introduced to Rose, after the death of her husband, Rose must find a way to support not only herself and children but also her late husbands cranky mother. With very few options Rose decides to open a small bed and breakfast style inn in the basement of her home as a means to bring in some income. The simple life of the Amish along with a pair of eagle who decided to call her land home prove to be a draw to those outside of the community. And the people who are drawn in also find themselves experiencing the love and restfulness found in this Amish inn.
I love this book and highly recommend it.

The spiritual danger of doing good

I wasn't too sure about this book, from looking at the title I was a little hesitant to buy too quickly into what Greer and Haggard were going to say!
However I was quite pleasantly surprised to see that more times than not I agreed with what was being said in the book.
I appreciated so much what Greer had to say in regards to be careful and mindful of your relationships. As a pastor's wife I've seen so many families in ministry who strive to minister to others, yet allow things on their homefront to fall apart. I appreciated Greer's practical response to these kind of situations, he used both humor and personal examples throughout the book to get these lessons across. I found the book to be full of common sense that is applicable to so many aspects of our lives.
I am highly recommending this book for my husband to share with other in leadership within our church!

A Simple Change

I very much enjoy Judith Millers books, so I was really looking foward to reading this one as well. I've only had the opportunity to read a few books regarding the Amana colonies, so I was pretty interested in reading this book!
Right away (as it is with Miller's other books) I was able to settle into a nice easy flow while reading the story. Miller has a knack for getting her reader to to feel at home with her characters, and her characters are portrayed  in a very likable and straight forward manner.
Due to the health issues of her mother, the Rhoder family all move back to the Amana colonies (where Jancey's mother and father were from) where Jancey's mother wishes to spend her final days among a simpler people and a simpler lifestyle. For Jancey it's bittersweet, while she wants to spend her mother's remaining days together, she knows it'll be quite hard saying goodbye to the children at the orphanage she teaches at. Jancey also struggles to learn the customs and rules of the colonies and what she's expected to do while on the colony.
I enjoyed this book! It was really well written and had such a great flow to it. Like always Miller's book was heart felt and heartwarming! As well there was a measure of a message in there that didn't come across as preachy!
I would  100% recommend this book!

Rules of Murder

I have to admit that while the book was entertaining, I found it a bit corny for my tastes, but perhaps that's the style of the genre. I haven't read many murder mystery type books so I'm a little out of my knowledge area in this one. However, I did still find it to be an entertaining book, and I enjoyed the read quite a bit. I imagine that many who are familiar with this genre will enjoy this book quite a bit!
This is the first book I've read of Deerings, so I was looking forward to checking out this new author! The book had a pretty good flow to it, and the author was able to explain and introduce her characters in a way that makes them quite memorable and (for the most part!) likable.
In this book we're introduced to Drew Farthering who happens upon a body and from there his word starts spinning. With both a mystery to solve, a murder to find, Drew also is getting to know Madeline Parker who he is quickly falling for!
I enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to those who are into the mystery type genres!

The Mercy Prayer

I was really looking forward to reading "The mercy prayer", I think our culture in general forgets that God desires to give mercy to His children. That He desires to give good gifts to them, we're surrounded by such loud (and wrong) voices out there that scream about God's hate, its nice to be reminded of His love.
Gelinas did a great job of conveying the message of mercy in his book, I love that while he was abundantly clear about God desiring to give out mercy, that He also included the expectations that God has for His children as well! I think there's too many times where people only get half that message, and what a disservice it is to them, not to know how to live fully in the way that God intended!
To me the centeral theme of the book was found in Psalm 103:8 "The Lord is compassionate, and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love". I also love that the author included the example of practical ways for us to show God's mercy to the world, many authors/preachers love to say we need to show mercy, but don't usually adequately explain how to do that. So I really appreciate Gelinas willingness to really teach his readers not only that they need to show mercy, but how to do so too!
I believe this is one of those life changing books, that will leave you seeking more of God and a willingness to do the work of God in turn.
I highly recommend this book!

Surviving an Affair

When I got the book for review, I was a little weary about it. I haven't had to live through an affair, and wasn't sure what benefit would come of me reading the book.
However, as a PW and someone who has had friends go through this, I thought that this would be a great resource to have.
While I found that the advice and help in the book was certainly geared towards the victims and perpetrators of affairs, a lot of the advice was good solid advice that would help any marriage, no matter the circumstances.
I did find it interesting to read about why affairs begin and end, it gave some pretty great insight to what all parties are going through. Plus it gave the reader (at least to me it did) a glimpse into what we need to pray about and work on within a marriage that has not gone through adultery.
I know that this will be a valuable book to have in general, especially for my husband when he is counselling couples, but I think its a great one that will benefit all of its readers!

Small Town Girl

I cannot even begin to describe how absolutely thrilled I was to see the continuation of the story we first read about in Angel Sister. I adored the first book (Angel Sister) it has been well read and one of my very favorite books. So after reading a few pages in and realizing that this book gave us another glimpse into their lives I was so excited to get through this book!
Honestly, it doesn't disappoint at all, just like within the first book, "Small town Girl" develops even more on the characters, who are very well written and easy to emphasize with.
Kate is an easy character to like, she was well written and had that air of "goodness" about her that didn't come across as annoying or condescending. I really appreciated that about the character.
I love that Gabhart had such a strong lead female in her book. That while she was independent and strong, was still written to show regular emotions and problems. She wasn't presented as a "wonder woman" type of character.
I highly recommend this book, its one of the best books you'll have a chance to read, and I highly recommend the first book too (angel sister). (although if you haven't read it, this book will still make sense and will still be enjoyable!)

Angels in the fire

I love books that are true stories that show God's hand in peoples lives in a supernatural way. It encourages me (and I'm sure other readers) that God is faithful to His children, and still intercedes in their lives!
I was looking forward to reading "Angels in the fire" Dann Stadler was a new author to me and I was looking forward to seeing what his story was all about!
I have to say, I'm very impressed with this book, the writing was very well done and the entire book had a good flow to it! (which sometimes isn't the case when reading about a true story, I find they usually are a great story that's poorly or far too simply written. I loved that this book wasn't like that!)
Within the whole book, I think that the part that encouraged me the most and spoke to me the most wasn't the initial rescue (which was an amazing story on its own) but the continuation of God's faithfulness to them throughout the months and years afterwards. I was encouraged by the fact that God continued to help them even when the "Immediate" danger was over. He didn't leave them to recover alone.
I highly recommend this book, I would even recommend it to a non-Christian reader. The story on its own is well enough written that it would be an enjoyable read, and while Stadler certainly speaks about God and shares about God, it isn't overly preachy!

Trouble in store

I had a chance to read another book by Carol Cox not too long ago, and very much enjoyed it, so I was really looking forward to reading this latest book of hers!
I have to say, that I think this one was even better than the last! I've mentioned in a number of reviews that I very much enjoy books with a strong female lead, so for the most part I very much enjoyed reading this book! I think the only parts where I didn't fully love the book were when the character had to neumerous times be rescued by the men (man) in her life. I would have loved to have seen the character be a little more independent.
 Melanie, after being let go from her previous employer, heads out west to her last resort, her portion of the store she inherited from her uncle. She's faced with the surly current owner who doesn't believe nor want, her to have any ownership in his store. As both face strong opposition within the town, they also struggle to undercover the mystery that seems to surround both the store and their late uncles.
I  enjoyed this book very much and would  highly recommend it to any reader who enjoys Christian fiction!

A Most Peculiar Circumstance

I read Turano's previous book "A change of fortune" and enjoyed it immensely so I was pretty excited to be reviewing her newest one as well! For the most part I did really enjoy this book, the characters were witty and well written. There was lots of mystery and suspense throughout it that kept me reading on!
I think my one main complaint would be that at the beginning of the book the banter between the characters was a little to forced (does that make sense?) it didn't seem natural and to me felt like the author was trying too hard to establish the intelligence and wit of the two main characters. However that feeling dissipated within a chapter or so, and I did very much enjoy the entire book! I love that it was a continuation from her last book, and enjoyed catching up on some of the characters we'd come to know!
In this book we focus on Zayne and Harrison's sister Arabella, and her penchant for trouble as she seeks to help out those less fortunate while she also fights for the rights of women.
I enjoyed this character, I like that she wasn't a simpering wimpy female, but that she was strong and independent. Its not often that you find that in a historical romance!
All in all, I would highly recommend this book! An excellent read!

NIV Leadership Bible

My original interest in this Bible was to pick it up as a tool for my husband to use in his ministry (he is a Pastor).
I really liked this Bible, I found the layout very easy to follow, the devotionals while focused on the idea of Godly leadership, were also beneficial and relevant to me, an average Christian. I think the only complaint I would have about it, is that I wish the devotionals were referenced somewhere, (as in a table of contents of sorts?). It was a bit of an adventure to try and find where the beginning of the devotional started! (If there was a table of contents for it, I was unable to find it. I looked a fair bit for it and never did find one!)
But as I said, that would be my only complaint. I'm a big fan of the NIV version of the Bible, I find its the one that is easiest for me to read and understand. As well, the two tone leather cover is absolutely gorgeous, it looks great and is quite soft too!
This would be a perfect gift for our pastors, or others in leadership as well! It both looks great, and is full of Godly principles on being a leader.
Its been a bit of a fight to get my hands on this Bible now, my husband looked over it after I had finished giving it a good look in order to review. He loves the devotionals, but also loves how professional and sturdy the Bible is. Also its one that's made to lay flat, which for him is such a bonus. When he's preaching, or just leading someone through the Scriptures, its always a nuisance to constantly be loosing his page.
This is a perfect Bible for him, and an awesome one for me too (when I can get my hands on it!)

That Certain Summer

I've been used to reading Hannon's crime books, so upon seeing that she wrote a romance novel I was pretty intrigued! And I was surprised that I enjoyed this topic of writing just as much (or more so) than I did her crime novels!
Her laid back style really draws me in, and even in the beginnings of the story I find myself settling in like I'm reading about an old friend! Hannon certainly has a talent in bringing her words to life!
In "That Certain Summer" we read about the stories of two sisters, Val and Karen who are not on the best of terms. Both grew up with feelings of resentment towards each other, and the years have not done much to change that. When Val needs to return to her hometown to care for her sick mother, we begin to learn of her secrets that first drew her away.
This was a great book, I highly recommend this book, it was such a wonderful read!

Deadly Devotion

I adore a book that showcases a strong female lead, and doesn't lend its-self to whimpering women throwing themselves on the mercies of the "strong men" in their lives. So right away from the look and description of this book, I figured that I would be fan of Orchard's writing style! (and I am!)
One thing I really adored about this book, was how the author continually kept me on my toes, as soon as I though i'd figured out one character, she'd throw another twist in that would completely surprise me!
When Kate's Mentor and research partner is killed, she throws herself into finding out who is responsible and the reasoning behind her friends death. As she delves deeper into these mysteries, we're drawn with her as she uncovers some surprising information! (I'm trying so hard to not give anything away, its such a great book, you really should read it for yourself!!)

Stealing the Preacher

I was so excited to see that Witemeyer continued on with the story of the brothers from the "Short-straw Bride", I enjoyed that book so much and knew that this one was bound to be just as good! (and I was right, this was a fantastic book!)
There were a few moments within the story that I was on the verge of rolling my eyes as it edged onto corniness, however Witemeyer pull that back each time and never did cross that line into silliness.
I would have liked reading more about Crockett (but I guess that's a sign of a good book, wanting to know more, lol) but I also appreciated all the background shared in Joanna's descriptions.
All in all, I did fully enjoy the book, and I imagine that if there was anything I "Had" to complain about, is that I wished it was longer! I can't wait for Witemeyer to come out with more books!!

The Quarryman's Bride

I love Tracie Peterson's books, I've been a big fan of hers throughout the years, so I was pretty stoked to see another of her's up fro review (and especially when I realized that it was a continuation of the Land of shining water series!!)
True to Peterson's style of writing, the characters came alive within the story. We run though a gauntlet of emotions with Emmalyne's triumphs and heart aches. One of the ways I see a book as a "great book" is when the author can show me an initial character that I find unlikeable, and by the end of the book, once their background story is known and their heart is known, I find myself softened and more understanding towards them. This book has all of those features, we go through heartache, journeys of strength, triumphs and fears with Emmalyne, and emerge from the end of the book wanting more!
I would 100% recommend this book, it was fantastic and has earned itself a position on my favorite (and most picked through) bookshelf!

Fully Alive

I am not a big fan of books that try to define my roll as a women, especially when it comes from a man. So I had a lot of mixed feelings when it came to reading this book. And I have to say I'm a bit torn. I appreciate that Crabb wanted to take people beyond their gender stereotypes, but the book (to me) tended to place the genders in a lot of generalities (or stereotypes). There were the "Typical" fears or "core terrors" from each gender that I found to be a bit stereotypical. And while I thought there were good points that Crabb made, it was a bit too boxed in for me.
I enjoyed that Crabb used personal stories to try and apply what he was saying to "real life", however I also found that it was a lot of reading in some parts for only a little bit of information. There was a lot of repeating within the topics, so I found myself frustrated when I felt I was reading the same info a few times over in different chapters, pages, etc...
In all though, I wouldn't entirely dismiss Crabbs book, he does make some interesting points, and there are sections of the book that cause you to look inward and be introspective. Which is always a bonus!
I'd recommend this book for those who know who they are and are aware of who they are in Christ. Definitely a book for more of a mature Christian, I'd shy away from recommending it to a new Christian though!

Joni & ken

I have long admired Joni in her attitude and the way she faces overwhelming obstacles, so when this book came up for review I was happy to request it!
Although Joni and Ken are facing much different and more difficult circumstance than most, there was so much I learned from them. And not just for the betterment of myself, but also my marriage. Their willingness to fight for their marriage, their commitment to love each other is very inspirational!
I very much appreciated their willingness to give their readers a look at their personal lives and struggles, not many in the public eye are willing to be so transparent.
I admire that their choice in marriage is to cling to Jesus to see them through every rocky time, and I am impressed with their openness to share the struggles within their marriage.
I without a doubt will highly recommend this book, (and any book by Joni!) There is so much within these pages that inspires you, challenges you, and betters you!

When Love Calls

I've read a few of Lorna Seilstad's books now (Making waves, A great catch, etc...) and one thing I've learned is that despite how the books look, these stories are anything but a typical romance/love story. I truly have enjoyed how Seilstad writes her lead female characters as strong women, not as silly smitten girls. With stories set in an age when women were thought very little of, its always refreshing to see a strong female!
First of all, I have to say I'm thrilled that this is a series, and that we'll get to read more about Hannah's sisters as well. The characters were so well written and likable that I was disappointed to have finished the book as quickly as I did, and cannot wait for the rest of the series to come out!
With Hannah having to gain employment to support her family, we follow her through her journey to not only "learn the ropes" in regards to her job, but we see too her struggle to follow her heart, while knowing how important her roll as provider for the family is.
I was really impressed with and very much enjoyed  this book, It will be a very well read addition to my bookshelf!

Undeniably Yours

Upon first glance, I was certain I wasn't going to like this book. To me it looked like it was going to be a goofy romance, with lots of flowery words, but little substance. Fortunately however "Undeniably Yours" was anything but that! halfway through this book, I had realized that I've read (and loved) another book by Becky Wade, (My stubborn heart). So this book taught me once again, that judging a book by its cover could have cost me missing out on this fantastic book. Without a doubt this has been one of the more moving books I've read in a while. True to style (in as much as I can say, considering this is only the second book of her's I've read!) Wade takes us beyond a basic romance, and looks into the hearts and lives of those she writes about. Instead of just a simple love story, we're brought into this world of emotions, disappointments, joy, love, etc... The story is such a big story in a small book!
I highly recommend this book!

Sweet Mercy

I'm not a big fan of romances, I tend to stay away from them at all costs. So I was a bit weary about this book, I've read and loved a couple of Tatlock's books ("A promise to keep" was a big favorite of mine) so I figured this one would be along those lines, (and it was).
The story is a love story, but there is so much to learn outside of that focus of the book.  With all the characters we meet, Marus, Link, Jones, etc... we learn valuable lessons about not passing judgement by first glance. And there is a strong lesson in the book to let go of bitterness and grudges, as well.
This book was a joy to read, I struggled to stay away from it until the very last page.
Eve Marryat is an easy character for the reader to identify with, and as she learns about those around her, we (the readers) learn some valuable lessons too. This book was great for teaching grace and mercy, (as well as honesty) but without coming across as preachy. I highly recommend this book!!

Revealing Jesus

This book has quickly become my go to book for when I start devotions, first of all I very much enjoy the author, and find that she writes books just as well as she writes songs! There is almost a lyrical quality to her writing that I'm finding myself drawn to. Zschech has used her songs for years to paint pictures of God's goodness and holiness, and that has transformed over to these books as well. The devotions are simple, and easy to understand, yet also offer the reader a challenge. The devotions are long enough to let the teaching points hit home, but short enough that they don't take large amounts of time to get through. My biggest struggle with this book is that I'd like to read through it all in one sitting because I enjoy the devotions so much. (I've with-held however, I want this book to last me a while longer, lol)

Jennifer

To be perfectly honest, I am a bigger fan of Dee Henderson's action novels, than I am of her love stories. Not to say that this book wasn't well written (it was), but I find that I can get into her action books so much easier. I did however enjoy this book, it was a little to short for my liking (but then again, aren't all good books?) but the story of Jennifer O'Malley was sweet and heartwarming. I enjoyed reading her story, journeying with her as she falls in love and subsequently must inform her family (of whom she is the youngest) of this developing romance. There are some twists and turns in this book (that I won't spoil for those who haven't read!) that remind me (and draw me in) of her more action packed books.
All in all, its a sweet story, and an enjoyable one. So I'll give it a good recommendation!

Adoring Addie

I very much enjoyed this book, (I'm quickly becoming a rather big fan of Leslie Gould!) Amish stories/fiction are one of my favorite genre's to read, so I was looking forward quite a bit to getting my hands on this! It did not disappoint, par for the course, Gould's book was witty, heartwarming (without being corny!) and full of wit and suspense!
One thing about authors that I appreciate a lot, is when they write a character into their book, who right away is disliked by their readers (in this instance, Addie's brother) and by the end of the novel they've found a way to make that character's story tie in to your heart too.
I enjoyed this book, (Although I would have loved to have read more about Johnathan and his background!) the characters were realistic, and their behavior and the results/conclusion of the story was realistic as well.
In the story, we read about Addie Cramer who's family is in a "Feud" with the Mosiers. Addie didn't concern herself with it too much until she happened to meet (and fall in love with) Johnathan Mosiers. The story is filled with deceit and opposition, but true to form, goodness shines through and love covers the multitude of sins!
I highly recommend this book!

Celebrations!

I was pretty excited to receive this book for review, I've heard raving reviews of the "Mennonite Girls Can Cook"  cook books and was so excited to try some out for myself! I have to say, that one of the big things I love about this book, is the passing on of some traditional foods. (especially the desserts!)

In this day and age, it seems like people are no longer interested in passing down the family recipes or traditions. And I think that we're missing out and losing out on that kind of stuff! I really enjoyed reading through the recipes and trying some out as well! (Buttermilk potatoes were a HUGE hit). The book is full of pictures (Which is awesome for a cooking disaster like me, its always nice to have a picture to show others what it should have looked like!) The book is beautifully laid out and I truly enjoyed The Bread for the Journey sections, They were simple, yet held some great profound truths!

I highly recommend this book!!

Love at any cost

To be perfectly honest, the description of the book left me feeling like I was not going to enjoy reading this at all. It seemed to be a stereotypical western romance that drives me crazy (and not in a good way!)
Fortunately it turns out that I make far too swift judgments of books! While I did at first find myself rolling my eyes and not liking the story as much, very quickly the characters started growing on me. Lessman did a fantastic job of tying her readers in emotionally to the main character Cassidy. It was easy to emphasize and sympathize with Cassidy, and to understand her struggles and heartache.  I have to say I was also not a huge fan of the male lead character Jamie at first, I didn't much care for him. But as the story went on and we were given more of his back story and his motivation/drive, I found myself liking him more.
In all, its not the typical book I enjoy, but I did find myself like this book quite a bit.

The Gate

This book reminded me so much of "the five people you meet in heaven" by Mitch Albom, except it was so much more Biblical, and I liked it so much more! For a fiction, this book has taught me so much more about the heart of God than many of the the devotionals I've read.
There were so many times that as I was reading through the journey Sky went on in this book that I would run over to read sections to my husband. I loved the description and imagery of looking at Good and evil (and your new self/old sinful self) with the feeding of two dogs. I've found even in my everyday walk with God, that it's effected what I've allowed myself to be involved in. (I'm constantly reminding myself, "Don't feed the black dog" when I'm tempted to fall into old habits!!)
At the end of this book, I have to say I so badly wanted this to be a true story and not just a novel! I love this book, it is going to be a well read and well loved member of my personal library. And I highly recommend it for the church libraries out there. Amazing book!!

The Dance

I have yet to find a book by Dan Walsh that I haven't loved with everything in me, the moment I see a new one by him I'm leaping to get my copy! And having Gary Smalley as a co-author on this book just sweetened the deal! These are two authors who I really respect and admire. I had no doubt this book would be fantastic. (it totally was!)
I loved the journey of this book, it was easy to see ( from an outside perspective!) how the destruction of Jim and Marilyn's marriage came about. And I loved seeing and learning along with Jim about how to not only restore his marriage, but to be the spouse that his wife needed! As a Fiction book it was very entertaining, heartfelt and just a wonderful read. But more so  this book is jam packed full of lessons that every couple should know. This marriage dance that they (Jim and Marilyn  go through, is one that every couple should know! (I'm strongly hoping that there will soon be a devotional/marriage book on the lesson's that Jim took, I would adore reading that!!)
Just an amazing book that I think anyone who's married or getting married, (or still looking!) should read!

What a son needs from his mom

To be honest, as a mom, at times I feel like a duck out of water when I look at the task of raising my son. I don't have the bond that him and his dad have. I don't understand what it's like to be a boy growing up and I don't understand the struggles that are unique to his gender. Most of the time I make the best guess I can and pray like crazy it was a good one! This book opened a world to me, for the first time I feel like I have an insight, a hold on what I can do to help my son become a God fearing, caring, and compassionate man. I also don't any longer feel that sense of dis-attachment that comes from not fully understanding this male child of mine! Out of everything in this book, I think my favorite was that Fuller gave an age by age set of advice, so it was easy to see where I am and what I can do with my child. There was so much I learned from this book, and so much that I'm learning still. I 100% recommend this book to any mom of a boy out there, there is some great insight and some wonderful advice in this book that will help you become the mom that your son needs!

Sweet Santuary

Kim Vogel Sawyer has been one of my very favorite authors for a while now, I love her books, they're heart warming, thought provoking and have a strong faith throughout them!
In the book "Sweet Sanctuary We meet Lydia, a woman trying her hardest to protect the son she loves. As an adoptive mom, I was able to relate quite strongly to the main character, and her fear of having her child taken. This is one of those stories that are so good and so through provoking, yet so hard to read. (this book reminded me a lot of "Like Dandelion dust" by Karen Kingsbury. There was a lot of strength and fear related to the main characters, yet we could see their choice to trust in God while in the midst of the trial)
I enjoyed this book, it took me through my own set of struggles and uncertainties that I have and the author made the reader feel like they could understand what struggles an adoptive parent faces at times.
I will always recommend Sawyer's books, but I also highly recommend this book in particular, especially to those who have adopted. This book almost has a sense of kinship about it, that enhances the story so much!

Finding God in the dark

Doubt, its one of my horrible little secrets as a pastor's wife, that I would struggle with my faith, especially when faced with death, heartache and major disappointments. Its something we (Christians in general) don't discuss, we hide it, we don't want others to discover that there's a part of us that buried that doubts the goodness and faithfulness of God at times.
Usually when reviewing I go for my favorite type of fiction books first, but upon seeing this book and reading the description I just couldn't put it down.
This book, it changes perspectives, it releases the reader from the guilt of feeling what they've been feeling. But they don't leave it there, they help you see how to pick up the pieces of that broken faith and come back into a trust with The Creator. There's an acknowledgment of the reader having been in (or still spending time in) that dark place, but no judgment over them for being there. We're lead back to the truth and mercy of God, that He is still there, still with us, and His grace is still for us.
These authors I felt were finally giving an unashamed voice and face to the secret struggles of Christians, this is hands down, one of the Best books I have read lately. This isn't just a book for the struggling Christian either, those who are dealing with the strugglers have a valuable resource in this book.
I can't say enough good about "Finding God in the Dark", go pick up this book.

A Hero's Throne

This is the second book of Ross Lawhead's in The Ancient earth trilogy, I had read "The realms There under" and enjoyed it immensely, so I had some very high expectations for this book!
One of the issues I had with the first book, which did happen quite a bit more frequently in Lawhead's second book, was that his characters had these massive dialogues, that were difficult to follow, and rather sporadic. This was much more apparent in his second book than the first. I struggled through much of the book, to keep up with the story, and understand where there characters were going and their interactions with each other. but even within that, there were moments in the book of absolute suspense and wit. When he's got a good flow down, Lawhead very much reminds me of Tolkien, or C.S. Lewis. So although I can't claim to have enjoyed this book as much as the first one in the series, I'm not ready yet to give up on this author. When he's good, he's VERY GOOD. I love the idea of this story, and once I can figure out the ebb and flow of the book, I generally enjoy it very much.
If you decide to read this book, I highly recommend you read the first one in the series. This is not the kind of book that will make sense on its own, you do need the back story!!

The Gospel Centered Woman

The moment I picked up this book and read the first page, I knew this would be a fantastic book! Even within the initial few pages I was learning so much! I struggle so much with a lot of the teachings from different authors on the role of a woman in the Kingdom of God. So many are so quick to dismiss a woman, or try telling them that their only Godly role is to be the stay at home mom type of person/proverbs 31 woman. I love that the first thing we're introduced to in this book is the lesson that we (women) too are image bearers of God. That more than anything has encouraged me so much, finally someone who doesn't want to place my value on how many casseroles I cook, or how clean my house is! That our identity is found in Christ, and our role of Biblical womanhood can be garnered from Christ's words and examples! I also absolutely loved how the author (Wendy Horger Alsup) in her initial chapter showed that the term "help meet" (that so many seem to use to push women down!) is also used in reference to God in other parts of Scripture. That was something that floored me, I have never heard this or been taught this! All the teaching we seem to get seems to be geared to push us down, and here's this term that's been used almost in a condescending way towards women, and instead of it being a minor, unimportant role, it show a role of strength, and character!
I love this book, and love that we are being taught within it to find our role in life and in God's kingdom from Christ! Such a great book!
This was something I cannot wait to share with other women, and have already highly recommended it to our ladies group and many of the ladies within our church and others!

You're made for a God-sized dream

To be completely honest, I wasn't excited about reading this book, I'm not a person who usually goes for the "self-help" "you can do more" type books. They aren't really what I like reading. However Holley Gerth has been highly recommended to me by others, so I knew that although these aren't my favorite type of books, that this would be a pretty good read!
Out of everything that Gerth wrote about in her book, I think the main idea or encouragement I took from it was that we CAN have God sized dreams and that God will be the one who works through us, and works for us in revealing these dreams and making them a reality. For me this book was a giant faith booster, its encouraged me to be open to where God wants to take me and to allow those "big"  God sized dreams to take root, that God will see us through it!
Now that I've read "You're made for a God sized dream" I'll be seeking out her other books, I'm kicking myself for not listening to people sooner and looking her up! This book was so encouraging that I'm also recommending our church library pick up a copy! I can't wait for other's to be inspired by this book!!

Scent of Lilacs

I'm used to reading the Shaker books from Ann H. Gabhart, so its always a surprise and delight to find a book of hers that is of other things. Having read Angel Sister (which I have re-read repeatedly, its an amazing book) I know that Gabhart is a fantastic and strong writer who really puts emotion and thought into her stories.
this time wasn't any different, and this book is right up in line with "Angel Sister". I adored this book, there are not enough good things to say about this fantastic and heartwarming story. I love the characters in the book, they're unique and witty, yet they have a aura of realism to them too. Like you could easily meet them outside the pages of the book!
Our main character we read about is Jocie, who is a bit of a tomboy yet also becoming a young woman. As she struggles within her own changes, the world around Jocie drastically changes as well. Raised by her father after Jocie's mother and sister left, Jocie dreams of one day seeing again her older sister. She is however surrounded by love within her small community, with both family members and co-workers of her father. In the midst of a confusing time, Jocie's small world is shattered by a revelation and a horrible accident. We journey with her as she struggles to understand who she is and what all these new revelations make her.
Honestly, this is one of THE BEST books I have read. Period. I love the story, I love the characters, and I love the message. And I am absolutely overjoyed to see that this is a series, I cannot wait to read the future books in this serious.
I highly recommend this book, I cannot say enough good things about it!

Moonlight masquerade

This is the first book by Ruth Axtell that I've had a chance to read, I'm always happy to add new authors to my library, so I was pretty excited to get my hands on this book!
Her style (Ruth Axtell's) reminds me of Siri Mitchell, or Julie Klassin's, in that she takes strong stances with her female lead characters. There are no simpering and weak women found in her book, the characters she develops on are strong, intelligent, and courageous. All in all, I very much enjoyed this read, and believe that I will be adding more of Axtell's books in the future!
Lady Celine lives resides in and engages in society in England, yet her heart and loyalties still lie with France. In a time where they are at war, this is a rather dangerous and precarious position to be in. And it is made more so when Lady Celine is also a spy for French Jacobites as well.
Rees Phillip's is sent in to spy on lady Celine (who has stirred the curiosity of England's branch of Homeland Security) and goes in to play the roll of her temporary butler. As he struggles to keep his true identity hidden and find evidence that will prove Lady Celine's loyalties, he finds himself drawn to her. Celine proves herself as an integrity filled, compassionate woman, who is simply fighting for what she believes in. Rees finds himself conflicted when he must decide between his country or his heart.

Unrivaled

Siri Mitchell is a unique writer, she takes stories set in historical times, and explores not only the troubles of the times, but she allows her female characters to not just go with the status quo. The Characters in Mitchell's books (at least the ones I've read, and I've read most of hers!) tend to be strong women who are not afraid to stand against society when they feel its the right thing to do. I absolutely fell in love with Siri Mitchell's writing style in the book "She walks in beauty" it was such a wonderful, heartwarming and encouraging story. So I new when I agree'd to review Unrivaled that I was in for a treat! This book did not disappoint, typical to her style, Mitchell's character Lucy is a strong willed, faith filled woman, who looks to go past societies expectations and step into her father's footsteps. After traveling Europe with her relatives Lucy is excited to put into practice what she learned during her tour of Europe. With a slew of new ideas for different Candies she can make, Lucy works hard to try and save her father's floundering company.
When her company's rival suddenly introduces his adult son to society, Lucy finds herself conflicted with developing feelings for him, yet still drawn to being loyal to her family and their company.
This is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it!

Swept Away

I had read the "Kincaid Brides" series by Mary Connealy not too long ago, and absolutely fell in love with her writing style. Although the books are a romance (And I'm not one to read a lot of romance books, too corny for my tastes!) they're not a typical type. Connealy is a witty and intelligent writer, who writes her female characters with strength and courage. That is what seals the deal for me in regards to her books, I enjoy the romance type books that Mary Connealy writes because they are not typical.
In Swept away, we begin to read about Luke Stone, (who happens to be brother in law to Seth in "Over the edge". I love it when Authors take a new series and still incorporate characters from previous series into them. Its like finding a friend!)
As he's traveling (and fighting to avoid being killed along the way) he stumbles upon Cassie, a young woman separated from her adoptive family after a sudden flash flood. Since he can't leave her alone to the elements, Luke takes Cassie along with him on his quest to regain his rightful property. Luke finds that Cassie is more than what meets the eye, she's courageous, a hard worker and more than a bit stubborn. As both continually find themselves in danger, they find themselves drawn to one another.
This book was excellent! Entertaining, and fast paced, it kept me interested until the very last page!

The Icecutter's Daughter

I am a big fan of Tracie Peterson, I've found myself really enjoying the type of books she writes. I especially enjoy the number of series she has done in an Alaskan setting. I love seeing strong faith filled people fighting the elements and thriving in these difficult to live places!
This book certainly did not disappoint in that regard, within "the Icecutter's Daughter" there is adventure, romance, faith, joy, and major struggles. It has everything within it to make it a fantastic book. I cannot wait to read the other books in this series!
Our main character is Merill, (who is the icecutter's daughter, hence the title!) she live as the only female in the midst of a household full of strong and protective men. With having such intimidating brothers, Merill fears that she will never find someone who is willing to step out and take a chance with her. However when a new man (Ruik) moves to town to partner in his uncle's furniture business, Merill finds herself drawn to him. In spite of their feelings for each other, many forces are at work within the story, that keep pulling them apart, including many accusations, misunderstandings and dangers!
Fantastic Book, right up there with Peterson's "Alaskan Quests" series. Strong faith filled characters that keep you very interested until the very last page!
Absolutely fantastic, and I highly recommend!!

Vanished

I read Irene Hannon's "Guardian's of Justice" series and very much enjoyed it, so I was overjoyed to see that she had come out with a new series!
Hannon's books tend to lean more towards mystery/suspense and less towards romance (which I so greatly appreciate!!) so for those of us who prefer to try to stay away from the romance genre, this book was a great balance! (Just enough romance to appease those who like it, but not enough to chase away those who don't!)
In this book we're reading about Moira, after driving and getting lost in a late night thunderstorm, she gets into an accident and hits a person with her car. A witness to the event comes by her vehicle to let her know he called the police before she passes out. However upon awakening she not only discovers that he didn't call anyone, and left, she also can't find the victim of her accident.
When she can't find anyone in the police force to believe her story she hires a PI to look into what's happened. And as things become clearer the danger for both of them starts to unfold.
I loved this book, it was a great read, very full of suspense and mystery! I even found myself feeling pity for the "Bad guy" of the story, which isn't an easy thing for an author to write in!
I highly recommend this book!

The Tutor's Daughter

I'm a huge Julie Klassen fan, I haven't read a book of hers that I didn't like, so I was very excited to see that this one was up for review, and knew it was going to be good!
Emma is the main character in the book who helps her father run a small boarding school after the death of her mother. She picks up much of the slack as her father battles to deal with the sadness of losing a spouse. In a twist of events, her father is hired to go on as a tutor to a well off family and Emma joins him in order to help him through the change and make sure he does the job to the best of their ability.
This book was great, well written, great flow, and a lot of suspense. There were some great mysteries within this book that really kept me reading until the very last page!
I love historical books and very much felt that Klassen's book held historically true of the times, so it made it that much more easier get into to!
I really recommend any readers look up Julie Klassen, she provides some great books that have a strong Godly message and an enjoying read!

The marriage of Your Dreams

Like the previous book I blogged about ("What Your husband isn't telling you" by David Murrow) there were points in this book that did reflect what I've read in a previous book on the topic of men and understanding them. However there is enough of a range of topics in this book that the chapters that were a bit similar (in concept, not text) didn't cause enough of a fuss to put the book down.
I did though, enjoy this book a fair bit more, Rick Johnson did a really good job avoiding and trying to categorize women in stereotypical ways. His energy seemed more focused on pointing out what men need/desire rather than trying to dissect and place the sexes into certain boxes, so I really did appreciate that.
I really found interesting and felt very challenged on two of his topics within this book. First, how our husbands communicate and the differences/misconceptions we have of each other in that regards. Its allowed me to have tools at hand to make known to my husband the needs I have without me communicating in a way that he won't take to  heart.
As well, I enjoyed the chapter on men and their work/need to be a provider. I am married to a strong provider so I really enjoyed seeing the insight Johnson gives on men in this chapter and could very easily see my husband in what he was writing!
I would highly recommend this book as one for women who are trying to better understand their  husbands, I really enjoyed this book and have really nothing but praise for it!

What your Husband isn't Telling You

I'm wavering on my like/dislike of this book. There were parts of the book that I thought were well thought out and really insightful. The David Murrow did a great job at explaining in an easy to understand way, some of the needs of our husbands, and why they think the way they do.

However with that said, there were parts of the book that bothered me, two specific things within it that really stood out.

First, I found that Chapter 8 was fairly similar (in concept, not text) to a book called "For Women Only: What You Need to Know About the Inner Lives of Men" written by Shaunti Feldhahn. (published in 2004)

Her book deals with much of what is found in chapter 8, and at times I'm bothered by the similarities/un-originality of the chapter. But it isn't enough of a big deal that it caused me to put the book away permanently, and he did have much more in his book than that single chapter.

Secondly, I found some of his views of women (and men at times) a little silly and the stereotypes both present and exaggerated. Most specifically in chapter 10 when he refers to the masculine and feminine ways of child rearing and he provides a chart with the Masculie/feminine ways. (Ex; with "you failed" being a masculine feature and "helicopter parenting" being a feminine one) I found myself rolling my eyes a bit with this one, and while I can see (slightly) where he was coming from, I found it a little over the top and was more of a generalization/stereotype than a reality.

All in all, I did learn a fair bit from the book, and at times did enjoy it, so on that level I would recommend it. However women will need to be prepared to see and sift through some rather stereotypical portrayals.

The Air we Breathe

Initially this book was a little bit of a struggle for me to get into, I had trouble keeping up with the supposed character switches and following the story. However, once I caught on to how the story flowed, this book turned into a fantastic book!
I love a book that can cause a wide range of emotions in me, plus sway my like/dislike of certain characters. Initially I wasn't a big fan of Molly's mother, what I read didn't overly cause me to like her much. However as I made my way through the story and saw the reason for some of her choices, I began to understand where she was coming from. As well, the main character Molly, was fantastically written. Christa Parrish was able to really show the heart of this character and easily got across her emotions and fears. This was a book that was a big struggle to put down. The book was heart warming, suspenseful, emotional and happy as well. There was so much in this book, that I think it would suit well to any type of reader. I was highly entertained throughout the book and really loved this story!
Highly recommend!!

Lifelong Love Affair

To be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge fan of marriage books, they seem to fall into a couple of categories, either the author is trying to prove how wonderful their marriage is and calling others to get up to "their standards" or they give fluffy advice that seems more like common sense than a new revelation. Fortunately This book, didn't fall into either of these categories! First off, the book was personal, the author gave examples and his own life stories (and not just happy fluffy stories, but showed his struggles as well) that expanded on and help the reader understand/make applicable what Evans was speaking about. The book wasn't boring, and that was a huge bonus for me. I'm a huge fiction fan, so if I'm going to take the time to read a devotional, marriage help, self help, etc... book then it had better teach me and not bore me. I don't have time or a desire to fill my relaxation times with boring. I want to be challenged, I want to learn something new. I don't want to open a book and read something I already knew! This book was not only challenging, it was entertaining. The Author (Jimmy Evans) has a great flow to his writing, and comes across as quite witty throughout the book, so I really appreciated it! He offered relevant insight, while also backing up what he said with well placed Scripture. I didn't find that he took anything really out of context to prove his points either, so that was a bonus!
All in all though, I'd really recommend this book, no matter where you are in your marriage. If you're just starting out, or already in a comfortable place with your spouse, I'd encourage you to pick up this book. Evans has some great advice and some fantastic insights, you'll be glad you read it!

Cut Your Grocery Bill In Half

I have to say, I wasn't a 100% impressed with this book, I was really prepared to like this, and lean alot from this couple. However I found that most advice was a lot of common sense, or advice seen on a lot of the debt-help shows. Plus, as a Canadian, I didn't feel like a lot of what was suggested would work for us anyway (we don't have the same types of sales, etc...). So while there was a lot of good advice in the book, to me it was something that either I'd already heard/read, or would have figured out on my own.
I liked some of the suggestions, but other ones struck me as unrealistic, or not something you'd want to do (such as freezing your milk, I always find that my milk tastes different, and not in a good way!) But I did really appreciate all the recipes they provided, I'm always happy to learn to make something new in the kitchen. Especially when the recipes were so budget friendly!!
The book was however well written and in an easy to read format, so it wasn't a struggle to get through. So I'd still recommend this to people, but would say its more for an American family rather than a Canadian.

An Amish Kitchen

I am a huge fan of Amish fiction, I love reading about and learning about the simple life they lead and their strong reliance on God. Also I was beyond excited to see that there were 45 different recipes in the back of this book!! The only thing I love more than reading about the Amish, is learning to cook like them!
I found this book quite sweet, the stories were short, but so well written, that you don't feel like you were shorted in any way! I've read a number of Beth Wiseman's books, so I knew I was going to be reading a pretty great book already! (and I am a bit familiar with Both Kelly Long and Amy Clipston, and have enjoyed some of their short stories in the past). I wasn't surprised by this book, and enjoyed it so much!
Each story, (From Fern's slowly blooming love and trust, to Eve's struggle to build a relationship with her mother once again) had a really great heartwarming overtone to them. They were strongly Christian stories, but not in an overtly preachy way, so I would be very comfortable and highly recommend them to both Christian and non-Christian readers alike!
Excellent book, fantastic stories, and a great read!

Placebo

I'm a big fan of suspense and mystery books, When I read I love to be taken throughout a range of situations and emotions! Having read Steven James' "Patrick Bowers Thrillers" series I had some high expectations for His latest novel "Placebo". Knowing that he writes an intelligent and intense kind of book I knew I was in for a great experience.
His latest novel did not disappoint, this was one of those books that I could just not put down. The story flowed so quickly and had so many twists that even in those rare moments of placing the book down I found myself wondering what would be happening next!
I especially appreciate that James wrote about and deals with the topic of Pharmaceutical companies and corruption/dishonesty/dangers. With this kind of story being so popular now, its nice to see that there are those in the Christian market making a place for themselves within it.
I 100% will recommend this book, I appreciated that he challenges the reader with such a thought provoking and strong storyline.

Courting Cate

I love reading Amish books, and reading about the different traditions and difficulties that they face living in a modern world. And one thing that I very much appreciated about "Courting Cate" and its author Leslie Gould was that she took the time to add a real strong background and depth to her main characters. We didn't just see the main characters facing unrealistic problems, but she really touched on issues (especially involving the main character Cate) that anyone could easily relate to. Her problems didn't revolve around "how to find a husband" or "entering spinsterhood" type issues that seem to be common among Amish fiction. We see main characters who deal with issues that people in any walk of life deal with. From death, and deceit to growing up in criticism and unkindness. The book had a level of depth that isn't often found. I highly recommend this book. Very well written and not quite what a person would expect!

A change of fortune

Upon first glance of this book, I had thought it would be a fairly simple and silly read. I don't often find books that deal with someone "masquerading" as another to be overly serious or thought provoking.
"A change of fortune" started out slowly and slightly silly, but had such humor to it that I found myself not minding. And throughout the book, it seemed to keep a good balance between humor and depth. While there were some incredibly funny parts of the book, we still could follow a story line and see a sense of danger/drama. I loved the way the characters spoke, Jen Turano wrote such witty and charming conversations between the characters that I immediately liked them!
In the book we follow the life of Lady Eliza Sumner, who poses as a governess in America after her fortune is stolen. Through some twists and turns Eliza makes some good friends who begin to champion her cause.
I loved how strong the female characters were, there are so many times in Historical fiction that people almost pick up the attitude of that time and assume that the characters in the books need to be timid and meek. I loved how strong and confidant and independent the Lady Eliza was portrayed along with a whole slew of other female characters!
I loved this book and will be looking for more from this author!

The breath of Dawn

This book was outside of the usual genre that I enjoy, so I wasn't all that sure I was going to enjoy this one. However, I was quite impressed and thoroughly entertained by this book, it was very well written and had such a strong flow to it that my only issue was that I struggled to put it down!
The book centers around Morgan Spencer, a successful business man, who helps "sick" businesses get back on their feet; and Quinn, a quiet woman who lives in seclusion operating her own online business. Upon a chance meeting both Morgan and Quinn begin to find themselves further drawn into each others lives and the problems (and dangers) that accompany them. When the unexpected happens and Quinn finds herself in danger, Morgan takes some giant steps to ensure her safety.
I really enjoyed this book, while it was entertaining, there was a strong Christian emphasis and message to the book (without coming across as preachy).
I would easily recommend this to anyone looking for a good read!
