Chasing Mona Lisa

Chasing Mona Lisa, Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey, 978-0-8007-2046-9

I love 1940's type fiction and I've loved other books I've read by Tricia Goyer (This is my first time reading a Mike Yorkey book though) so I had high expectations for this book and was glad to see that they were met and exceeded!
The book starts with the beginning of the end for the nazi army and their retreat away from the armies that have come to liberate the prisoners and victims of the nazi regime. During their retreat the nazi army goes through the countryside stealing priceless works of art that they hope to use to make deals with after the war. a group of three Swiss agents step in to try and stop the nazi's from stealing one of the most famous paintings, the Mona Lisa. As they get closer to rescuing the famous painting they find themselves in more and more dangerous positions.
This was a great book, very much an "edge of your seat" type book that really kept my attention throughout the entire story. I really enjoyed the book and appreciated that the authors kept to the historical/factual details of that time period.
This is one book that I highly recommend.

When the smoke clears

When the Smoke Clears, Lynette Eason, 978-0-8007-2007-0

I've read a number of Lynette Eason's books and have come to really appreciate her style and the suspense her books offer. I think out of all the books of her's that I've read this one has to be my favorite. Right from the very beginning of the book we get right into the mystery and suspense of the story and it is non-stop until then end of the book! Again this was one of those books where its a struggle to put them down because there's just so much going on, that its hard to pull myself away from the book!
In this book we're introduced to Alexia Allen who after leaving an abusive home straight after graduation becomes a firefighter, when her equipment malfunctions and she's faced with time off pending an investigation Alexia decides to finally take the leap and go home for a visit. As she struggles to face the ghosts of her past she finds herself hunted by a ruthless killer that seems to go to any lengths to stop her.
Fantastic book and one I'll be reading over and over again!!

In too deep

In Too Deep, Mary Connealy, 978-0-7642-0912-3

I was so excited to see that we were receiving the second book in the Kincaid Brides series, I absolutely loved the first book and was eager to learn what came next for the characters we were introduced to in the first book! This book followed suit, with the same kind of quirky humor (that I enjoy so much) yet with underlying drama and suspense throughout it.
This time we learn more about Ethan Kincaid and his fears and failures, and begin to understand why he behaves the way he does. When he suddenly finds himself married with a new toddler and infant Ethan finds he needs to begin becoming the man that his new family needs him to be. After being faced with having it all stolen away from him Ethan finds his inner courage and tries to step up and be the hero his family needs.
This was a fantastic book and one I absolutely recommend!

Sixty Acres and a Bride

Sixty Acres and a Bride, Regina Jennings, 978-0-7642-0990-1

Rosa Garner (the main character) and her mother in law return to Texas and their small ranch after losing both of their husbands in Mexico, only to find that their ranch (that had been rented out) was far behind on its taxes and they were now facing losing the ranch as well.
In the story both women struggle to bring the ranch up to standard and bring in some money while also having to deal with some shady neighbors and a lot of discrimination because of Rosa's heritage.
This book was great, I very much enjoyed reading it, especially because the the main character (Rosa) was not portrayed as some weak woman who couldn't take care of herself. While there were situations where she did receive help, she also was shown that she had enough strength of character to face them herself as well. (Which I really appreciated about this book!)
I highly recommend this book, this is the first time I've read a book by this author and I sincerely hope this will not be the last. The book was very well written and very attention grabbing!

Blue Moon Bay

Blue Moon Bay, Lisa Wingate, 978-0-7642-0822-5

To be perfectly honest, this was a book that initially I struggled to get into. While it was well written, the progress of the book seemed a bit slower than what I usually read. However I was very glad when I continued on and eventually finished the book. While it wasn't an edge of your seat type book it was in its own way a fantastic book. This is the second book by Lisa Wingate that I've read and she keeps to her authentic relaxed style that (at least I) have come to know (her books) by.
The main character Heather Hampton is an architect in the city and is looking at a rather large project that would "benefit" the entire community of Moses lake. However ones she arrives there she finds that she's facing some extreme opposition to the proposed project and struggles to understand why the small town doesn't want outside "help" that would encourage growth.
This was a wonderful read and I would highly recommend it!

Words Spoken True

Words Spoken True, Ann H. Gabhart, 978-0-8007-2045-2

I've read a few of Ann H. Gabhart's books (mostly the books about the Shakers) and immensely enjoyed them so when I saw this new book I was eager to read it! And honestly, I think this is one of her best books yet (right up there with Angel Sister, which was an absolutely amazing book), I loved this book and absolutely loved all the history it contained! The political turmoil of the time was captured perfectly in this book! One of the things I like the most about a good fiction book is that it gives you an opportunity to either learn something new, or gain a new perspective while being entertained. This book gave you plenty of opportunities! It was well written and had such great movement to it that I struggled to put it down. So much was going on and there was so much suspense that I found myself saying "one more page" or "one more chapter" till about 1am! This was a great book, and one I'll be holding onto indefinitely.
There are just not enough good things I can say about this book, its one of those ones I'm going to not only recommend to others, but insist that they read it!

Sweeter than Birdsong

I love historical novels, especially when they are based on a real life person (like Ben Hanby) so I was beyond excited to read this book! This is my first time reading a book by Rosslyn Elliott, and I will definitely be seeking out any future books of hers, this book was so good!
The story is mainly about Kate Winter, and her life with an over-controlling mother and a drunk father. As she dreams of escaping this life to a new one she is suddenly thrust into a new world where she becomes the rescuer and in turns finds a passion she didn't know she had.
This book was quite well written, and though it was also a romance, it didn't have the typical mushiness in it. It was adventurous and full of suspense. I truly enjoyed reading this book and will definitely be recommending it!

The Voice New Testament

Product Image for The Voice New Testament by Ecclesia Bible Society

I love this Bible, it's become my "Go to" when I am doing my devotions now! I love the language of it, it's full of passion and excitement, but still sticks to what the original author was saying! I find this Bible has helped me gain a better perspective at times on what is being written about in certain books. Right now, I'm working my way through Galatians and I have found that this version has really put a great emphasis and made it much easier to understand!
I also love (LOVE) that when referring to Jesus, the book uses the term "The Liberating King", what a powerful image that conveys!!
As a pastor's wife, I'm always on the look out for books that can help a new convert in their walk, and this is definitely one I'll be suggesting to our leadership teams! I highly recommend this book, whether you're a new convert or an old one, it'll speak to you!!
I have been Hoping like crazy that they'd come out with a full Bible in "The Voice" version, and I'm so excited to see that there will be one coming out in March! I know (based on this NT Version) that the full Bible will be just as good and Cannot wait to pick up a copy of it for myself.
Really this has become one of my absolutely favorite Bibles of all time, its perfect for devotion times!!
