Debt-proof your Christmas

Cover Art

I was really interested to read this book, as one of those people who work hard to "make" Christmas special for my family, I had a real eye opener about  what was really important.
Mary Hunt leads us (the readers) though the struggles people can face (especially at Christmas time) with the cost of the holidays, and gives insight and tips on how to keep that spending under control.
With encouragement from this book, I was able to take the time to think creatively about what I could do for the family without putting myself into debt over it. I loved the challenge this book presented, to think outside of the "commercial box" and still provide a great holiday experience. I'm excited to see our Christmas this year, where its so much more focused on family, and much less on "stuff"
I highly recommend this book!

Christmas Roses

Christmas Roses

This is without a doubt one of my very favorite Christmas books now, I was absolutely wrapped up in the story that Amanda Cabot wrote. I'm a sucker for any book that shows the plight and struggle of women trying to make it on their own in the older days. I love reading about these strong women who battle their own struggles and also the expectations put upon them from society!
There really isn't enough good things I could say about this book, the story is excellent. We read about Celia who loses her husband to an accident and is now struggling to keep her home running, raise her infant daughter and operate a boarding house that is only a 1/4 full! As she's faced by a number of suitors, and pressure from others to consider them, Celia dreams about marrying again, but this time for love. Though she grew to love her husband, she desires to have a marriage like she's read about.
Absolutely fantastic story, I loved this book and will highly recommend this book!

The Christmas Pony

Cover Art

I've enjoyed Melody Carlson's books for a while now (especially the Christmas ones!) so I had some high expectations for this book! The story is a very heartwarming story, set in a widow's home turned boarding house who struggles to make ends meet and raise her daughter (and house her mother). I really enjoyed this book, a lot. The characters were thoughtful and had a lot of depth to them, and the story line had a really great flow to it! Really the only complaint that I have regarding this book is that I really wish it was longer. I really wanted to know more of Lucy's back story, and would have loved to have read about her future!
All in all though, this was a highly enjoyable story, and a perfect Christmas gift for book lovers!

Real Life: Real Miracles

Cover Art

This is the second book that I've read by James Garlow and Keith Wall, their first book "Miracles are for real" was very popular in my household (both immediate and extended) and has been passed around quite a bit. So I had high expectations for their latest book and was looking forward to reading it!
I very much enjoyed this book, the stories of people experiencing all sorts of miracles really encouraged me. I love hearing stories about the work that God does in the life of His children, and the miracles he performs. It reminds me so much of just the vast amount of love that God has for His own.
This book is a huge encouragement, especially for those seeking their own miracles! Such a faith booster and encouragement!

C is for Christmas

Cover Art

This book brought out the history nerd in me! I love learning about the different histories and getting deeper insights into the meanings behind Christ's birth and the Bible. I found this book hugely interesting, normally I can handle these kind of "non-fiction" lots of facts type books in smaller doses. However with "C is for Christmas" what I was reading was so interesting and insightful that it made me want more! I actually finished this book within a day, and was quite disappointed when it was over!
Another thing I really liked about this book is the themes behind it, the way the authors set it up in an alphabetical flow. It really looks like it would work great to use as a group devotional! We've been reading it too as a family (Although we aren't going in order!) Even my son, (who's almost 11) is really into learning the symbolism and different meanings we've found in the book!
I highly recommend this book, its really enriched our Christmas this year, and will be a big part of our Christmases from now on!

The Fantasy Fallacy

I received "The fantasy Fallacy: Exposing the deeper meaning behind sexual thoughts" from Booksneeze for review. When I read that it was a book about why women are going crazy for the 50 shades, and the deeper meanings behind it, I thought that it would be a worthwhile ministry read.
I was very impressed with the author, there have been a couple of books out that involve Christianity and sex, yet all seem to be more "fluff" than anything overly helpful or insightful. Ethridge went far beyond that, she was willing to get into the "Uncomfortable topics" and give an honest look and insight into the sexual thought process, (I found this more geared towards women, however I'm sure plenty of men could benefit from this book as well!).
Honestly I think this is a book that our Church leaders need to read, it gives some fantastic insight into women and their thoughts, while being in a Godly "Atmosphere". Ethridge makes good use of Scripture, and keeps the Scripture in context (which I appreciate!).
All in all, I would say I highly recommend this book, especially for leaders!

Dear Deb

Dear Deb : A Woman with Cancer, a Friend with Secrets, and the Letters That Became Their Miracle, Margaret Terry

I generally don't like to read books (even the ones that are supposed to encourage and inspire the reader) that deal with the topic of cancer. I find them horribly depressing, and instead most seem to serve as a reminder of who we've lost, or those we know who are facing the cancer battle now.
With that said, I did start this book with a lot of trepidation  I wasn't expecting or planning to like the book at all, I was simply just wanting to quickly get through it and give it a proper and honest review.
However while there were parts that lived up to the expectations I had regarding it bringing up reminders of who we've lost, there was so much more in it that served as an inspiration and almost a comfort.
I loved the letter and the story that dealt with the Scripture verse Luke 1:37, I love how God takes a subtle moment, (even when fought against) to remind that He can do the impossible. Its a simple yet amazing reminder of God's love for us, and His power to touch His people.
I do recommend this book, at times its a hard emotional read, but in the end its worth it.

Bees in the butterfly garden

I very much enjoyed "Bees in the butterfly garden" as dispicable as the acts were (that the main characters were doing) it was hard not to like the characters themselves. They were easy to like and showed a lot of depth.
Meg Davenport was raised in a boarding school, with very little contact with the only family she had left (her father). When he passes away suddenly Meg feels that she has no reason to stick around the school any longer. As she travels out to her father's home she discovers that he isn't the man she thought him to be. Involved in the illegal aspects of life, her father had set up a lifestyle for himself that he didn't want her to be a part of. As Meg discovers more about her father she tries to fill the spot he left behind, and finds herself in some very dangerous situations!
The book is a great read and has a fantastic ending, I highly recommend it!!

The Reunion

Reunion, The, Dan Walsh, 978-0-8007-2121-3

I love the books Dan Walsh writes, they're always meaningful, challenging and full of surprises! I've found that his characters tend to come out on the unexpected side! Each time you think you know a character, there's a new piece of info that surprises you and challenges you!
This is one of my favorites of his books, Aaron Miller is a war vet with a past who is working to enjoy a quite and simple life in a trailer park while he looks for ways to serve his Savior. Coming out of a life of addiction Aaron no longer has contact with any of his family (Ex wife, daughter and son), and although he prays to meet them again, he doesn't hold out too much hope. At the same time, he also see the struggles of those who live in the trailer park and works to try and befriend and help them.
Through a reporter and some amazing circumstances Aaron finds himself in a situation he never dared to dream about!
This was fantastic. Honestly I couldn't put it down, this reading went well into the night before I finally finished it! I love books by Dan Walsh and found him to be true to his style! Even if you've never read one of his books, you'll love them!
Highly recommended!!

Full Disclosure

Full Disclosure, Dee Henderson, 978-0-7642-1089-1

I've read a few books by Dee Henderson now and have thoroughly enjoyed them, so I had high expectations when I received this one for review.
At first I found the book a little hard to get into, it started off really wordy (which of course a book would be, lol, but more in the sense that the characters talking went on for so long and there was so much conversation there that I found it hard to follow at first). However once I got into the flow of the book, I was enthralled straight till the last page. I love a good action/mystery book and this one easily fit the bill!
The book focuses around Paul Falcon and Anne Silver, who both work within law enforcement but until now hadn't met each other. Paul is intrigued by Anne and begins to try to get to know her, the more he learns about her, the more he realizes how much more there is to know!
This was a pretty good book, I've enjoyed the other books by Henderson more, however I did still quite enjoy this one too. And if your a crime fiction fan, you'll love this book!!

All things new

All Things New, Lynn Austin, 978-0-7642-0897-3

As I've mentioned many times in the past, I really enjoy historical fiction, plus I very much enjoy reading novels by Lynn Austin. As someone who's read a number of her books now, I can honestly say that she has a writing style all her own and a fantastic ability to draw her reader into the story.
Josephine Weatherly is the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, however the war has torn all that apart. With the loss of her father and brother, the remaining family tries to bring themselves together as well as bring back the plantation to its former glory. While the majority of her family is stuck on monetary gain or revenge Josephine recognizes that they all need to change if they want a chance in this new world after the war. Former slaves are trying to rebuild their lives and learn what it means to live in freedom but are facing discrimination and danger from every side.
Loved this book, it was well written, and kept my attention till the very last page. Definitely recommend this book!

No safe harbor

No Safe Harbor, Elizabeth Ludwig, 978-0-7642-1039-6

I was so excited to see that this book is part of a series, after finishing this book, I wanted to know more about the characters! I can't wait for the other books of this series to come out!
This is the first book by Elizabeth Ludwig that I've read and I'm already a fan of hers! Although its classified as "historical romance" this book had enough danger and adventure that you didn't feel like you were in the middle of a romance novel.
Cara Hamilton receives a message from her brother (who she thought dead) to travel to america (from Ireland) and meet him there to continue their lives together. As she makes the journey she meets many people who become friends with her, and struggles to know who she should trust and who she shouldn't. Upon arrival in America she is unable to meet up with her brother and must forge a life for herself while she awaits his appearance. Through many struggles and dangers Cara learns who she can trust in her new life in America!
I highly recommend this book, it was very well written and had a great flow to it!

A home in Drayton Valley

Home in Drayton Valley, A, Kim Vogel Sawyer, 978-0-7642-0788-4

I love Kim Vogel Sawyer's books, I'm a huge fan of historical fiction and find her books to be thought provoking and challenging! In "A home in Drayton Valley" Tessie Raines finds herself in a situation she didn't expect to be in, with the challenge of raising children that are not her own, and a husband who is anything but, Tessie struggles to overcome the struggles of each day. As she reaches out to members of the community for friendship, she also struggles to overcome the racist attitudes of that time.
The book was full of suspense and drama, there were plenty of twists and turns that kept my attention throughout the entire book.
In the beginning of the book I very much disliked the character Joss (Tessies sudden husband) I didn't think that by the end of the novel that I'd find myself cheering for him!
This was a great book and I highly recommend it!

Jesus Pure & Simple

Jesus, Wayne Cordeiro, 978-0-7642-0351-0

This is a book that I think everyone needs to read, but especially those within ministry leadership! Cordeiro leads us back to the basics in his book "Jesus Pure and Simple" and reminds us of God's Lordship in our lives and how by following Him that everything else will fall back into place/priority.
This was a great reminder of putting our lives in Jesus' hands and just trusting that His will, will be done. That all those worries we have (especially when we're heading up ministries) and all our "programs" we try to put together are nothing unless we places them squarely in the hands of Jesus.
I enjoyed this book a lot, I'm mostly a fiction reader, so I struggle to keep my attention focused when I'm reading a non-fiction/devotional type book. However this book was well written and had such a great flow and interest level in it that I found myself really engrossed in the book.
I highly recommend this book!

The Gaither Homecoming Bible

NKJV Gaither Homecoming Bible, Hardcover

This Bible, it makes my heart happy. Some brilliant person decided to combine two of my very favorite things into one thing! I adore the Gaithers and have been a fan of theirs for a very long time, so I was beyond excited when I saw this guy in my mailbox!
At first I was thinking I wouldn't enjoy this as much as my other versions simply because its in the KNJV, and its not a normal version for me. However I find that along with the songs and small devotionals that are in this Bible, the NKJV works wonderfully with it. I love reading the thoughts and wisdom coming from both Bill and Gloria Gaither, as well as their homecoming friends. And I LOVE seeing all the songs they've written especially when I can see the scripture that inspired and the stories behind the songs.
I adore this Bible. There isn't a strong enough word out there that can properly express how very much I love this Bible. It doesn't matter if you're not a Gaither's fan, the devotionals (and obviously the Word of God!!) make this Bible worth it. As a musician within the church I really appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed the different quotes they provided speaking about the importance of music in a believers life.
I highly recommend picking up this Bible!!

What a difference a mom makes

What a Difference a Mom Makes, Dr. Kevin Leman, 978-0-8007-2173-2

Out of all the books I've read recently, I think this one has had the biggest impact in my life. As the mom of a boy, I struggle like many others to develop and hold onto the bond we have. In a house of all boys, there are struggles to really understand what my son is going through, and how I as a mom can be there for him.
This book gave some great advice and really gave me some absolutely wonderful insight into the role I play in my son's life, and the importance of fulfilling that role for him!
My son is almost 11 and on the verge of hitting the teen years, so I was mostly interested and excited to get my hands on the section of the book that talks about their teen years. In all honesty I've been slightly dreading the coming years, as I see the teens of today I worry that perhaps I haven't done enough for my child, that I haven't prepared him enough. With this book however I feel I am better equipped at helping my son through these years. I loved the insight Leman gives into the lives of boys, its something that I've not easily found, nor understood!
I HIGHLY recommend this book to any mom of a boy, it is invaluable!!!

My Journey to Heaven

My Journey to Heaven, Marvin J. Besteman and Lorilee Craker, 978-0-8007-2122-0

I struggle with these types of books, with the Bible mentioning so little on what Heaven is completely like, I have a hard time finding it believable/reliable to trust that what the person experienced is truly 100% legit.
I didn't find a lot scripturally wrong with this book (but like I said, there isn't much written on what Heaven is like or fully looks like) So I'm inclined to give at the very least a consideration to what the author has written about. I did enjoy the book, and it gave me pause to think of what Heaven may be like, but more so (and what I really did appreciate about it) was that it caused me to look even deeper into the scriptures. In an effort to make sure what I was reading lined up with the Bible, I found myself learning more about God's word and developing more a passion for it too. So on that level I really did enjoy this book.
I do think I would recommend it, I would just caution the reader to make sure they know the Scriptures and test everything they read against them, just so you're not caught up in the story without knowing if the Bible speaks (or doesn't speak) on that subject.

With Every Letter

With Every Letter, Sarah Sundin, 978-0-8007-2081-0

I love the books by Sarah Sundin that are set in the WWII era, I love this history of the time and the struggles and fortitude that the people of that time showed! This is the second book I've reviewed of Sundin's and I absolutely love the books she writes. While the books are a type of romance, she includes enough "danger" and historical aspects of it, that you aren't overloaded with it. Plus she stays away from the cornier type of romance writing that so many Christian books fall into, so I really appreciate that!
In "With Every Letter" Lt. Mellie, ( a nurse) is roped into writing into an anonymous mail exchange with some of the soldiers overseas. She's weary about having to make friends with a stranger as that takes her out of her comfort zone, but is willing to give it a try. Tom in a roundabout way becomes the recipient of Millie's letter and they begin to forge a friendship that quickly escalates into something much stronger. But with both of them holding on to secrets, neither can see a way of truly "knowing" each other.
The book is fantastically written, great flow and easy readability!

Love's reckoning

Love's Reckoning, Laura Frantz, 978-0-8007-2041-4

I adored this book, it took me through a wide range of emotions while reading the story. We read about Eden, who struggles to help keep their family's household running, even when it seems like members of her own family are against her. When a new apprentice blacksmith arrives to work under her father, he cooks up a plan to try and force him into staying on indefinitely. Eden then struggles with the choice of disobeying her father or following her heart and the Lord's guidance.
This book just kept flowing straight till the end, it was one of those books that's horribly hard to put down once you pick it up!
I really loved the historical aspects of the book (I love historical fiction!) and reading about the lifestyles of the people of the time. I found the book highly believable and very entertaining. The book contained and presented well God's love, but held itself back from being overtly preachy. So I would be more than comfortable with sharing this with my non-Christian friends.
Highly recommend!!

A hidden truth

Hidden Truth, A, Judith Miller, 978-0-7642-1000-6

I've read a few of Judith Miller's books now, and I'm quickly becoming a fan of her! From my recollection I've only read one other book about the Amana culture/people, so I was really looking forward to reading more about this group in this novel!
One of the things I truly appreciated about this book was that one of the characters (Dovie) was from outside their group/religion, so as she was introduced to the Amana way of life, we the readers were also able to learn more about this group of people! Dovie travels to the Amana colony to discover more about her mother's family and why she (her mother) left the Amana to marry Dovie's father. Karlina her cousin is fearful that with the arrival of a new shepherd that she will no longer be able to work with her beloved sheep. The book takes us through their struggles in both finding themselves and dealing with the challenges of falling in love in a strict religious setting.
I found the book highly interesting, the story had a really great flow to it, and the characters were personable and believable. You could feel the emotions coming right off the pages at some points of the story.

The Bridesmaid

Bridesmaid, The, Beverly Lewis, 978-0-7642-0978-9

I'm a big fan of Beverly Lewis, I really love the Amish themed books that she writes, and I especially love when she intermingles characters from previous books she's written.
This book was fantastic, true to her style, Lewis takes us on a journey with Joanna Kurtz, as she struggles with a passion towards writing, and staying within the orders of the Bishop and laws of the church. When she  has a chance meeting with a young Amish man from another colony she tries hard to grasp to the faith that God will work things out for their good.
I really enjoyed reading this book, the story hooked me straight to the end. The characters were so well written that I found myself at times feeling angry towards the ones in the book that were behaving poorly!
I'm very excited to continue on in this series and see where the lives of the other characters are taken!
Highly recommend!!

The River

This is the first time I've read a book by Michael Neale, but from the look of the book and what I had been hearing about it, I was pretty excited to get my copy in the mail! I have to say that the book more than met expectations, the writing style was easy to read/follow! I appreciate books that can draw me into a story and keep me there till the last page, its unique to find a book that is this enthralling and attention holding! I found that every time I had to put the book down (It was such a good book that there was no way I'd willingly stop reading, lol, so the only time it was put down was when I had no choice!) I would find myself wondering what would be coming next in the story.
I found it funny that this book was compared to "The shack" I read the shack and didn't like it at all, however I really enjoyed this story, so for me at least this book was better than "The Shack"!
If I had to offer one complaint it would be that the story was awfully sporadic/or jumpy at times. The flow of the story seemed a little off every once in a while, but not enough that it caused me to stop liking the book!
I've heard complaints that the book isn't "Spiritual" enough (or Christian enough), however I tend think that this is a positive not a negative. This is a book that does broach the subject/idea of Christianity/spirituality, but not in such a strongly "Preachy" way that I would be uncomfortable giving it to an unbeliever. For me that's important, especially if it draws out enough curiosity that the reader will follow through on their questions!
Its a good read, and one I'd recommend to Christians and non-Christians alike!

Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene, Diana Taylor, 978-0-8007-2048-3

This story drew me in completely, at the same time I was reading this book, I was also doing my devotions on the same timeline. The book gave a further perspective into the life and struggles of a Bible character that we know very little about. Throughout the book the author made known and clear the heart of the Savior, and his love, even for the "least of us"! Its not something that we usually consider when thinking on the people that were saved during Jesus time on earth. We know he drew the down trodden to himself, but when you consider the stories like Mary's (or others talked about in the Bible) who were possessed, you really start to grasp the heart of our Lord. It hadn't crossed my mind the absolute filth that these people would have lived in (Both in mind and physically). Yet Jesus draws them to Himself with open arms and absolute unconditional love. This book was interesting/entertaining, but more so it really opens your eyes up to God and His heart for us. Its easy to see the parallels between us and the main character Mary. How our sins my make us look to God, yet he looks past the filth and see's a beloved child of God.
I highly recommend this book, I don't believe that this was intended as a devotion/way to know God better, yet it effected me much more than many of the devotional books I've read. Do yourself a favor and get this book, you'll see a side to your Savior that you haven't understood!

The Haven

Haven, The, Suzanne Woods Fisher, 978-0-8007-1988-3

I adore the Amish books written by Suzanne Woods Fisher, it always feels like you're meeting up with old friends. I love how she keeps some of the more obscure characters from previous novels and begins a new story with them. It really feels like you're getting to know the "community" when you read through her books!
Having read all the previous adult books she's written, I was very excited to delve into this one!
In this book we see a continuation of the Stoney Ridge season's series, and follow up on some of the Characters we came to know in the first book "The Keeper". However this time we're focusing more on the life and struggles of Sadie Lapp. As she struggles to find her place in the community as a healer, and to assert her wants/opinions she also finds herself drawn to an outsider even while being pursued by by one of their own. When a surprise lands at her feet (literally) Sadie becomes the talk of the community, and rumors start to fly!
I loved this book, I knew I would. I haven't yet read a book by Woods Fisher that I didn't instantly fall in love with!
True to the author's style, the book was very readable and the way its written really draws in the reader!
I highly recommend this book, and Very highly recommend this author!

Dying to read

Dying to Read, Lorena McCourtney, 978-0-8007-2158-9

This is the first time I've had a chance to read a novel by Lorena McCourtney, and I have to say I very much enjoyed it! She has a really relaxed kind of writing style that makes the book very easy to get into. Her characters are easy to relate to, and even though the book has this kind of far fetched/unlikely to happen kind of story line, the way the characters are written makes the book much more believable.
The story is about Cate Kinkaid, who is between jobs and goes to work for her uncle at his Private investigation company as an assistant while she looks for a more suitable job. What was supposed to be an easy to handle case had suddenly turned into a large mystery with the appearance of a dead body. Pairing that with an accident that befalls her uncle, Cate is thrust into this mystery which keeps getting stranger and stranger.
The book was cute, its not the usual style that I read, but I did still very much enjoy it. Its a nice easy read, that provided a lot of entertainment!

Whispers in the Wind

Whispers in the Wind, Lauraine Snelling, 978-0-7642-0416-6

I have been waiting excitedly for this book to come out, the first book in the Wild west wind series, Valley of Dreams, was so good, that I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next book!  Just like the first book, we follow the lives of 4 friends (three of whom worked together on a wild west show) as the struggle now to make themselves a home in the valley that Cassie is a partial owner in. They face plenty of obstacles, from hostile members of the ranch's other owners, to poor attitudes and danger from towns people. Now that they've got a home, Cassie struggles to find a way to provide for her makeshift family, with her only experience being that of a gun-show/horse show, she now flounders on how to provide a living. I love that we can follow through the book, and see the provision of God displayed throughout it. Even in the times where Cassie faces her greatest struggles, the author has very aptly woven a thread of faith through the story.
This is one of those Staying-on-my-book-shelf kind of books, that will be read for a long time to come! Its such a great book that I don't hesitate to recommend this to anyone wanting an entertaining read that also causes you to both think and be challenged!

I love it when we have the opportunity to review books that are part of a series, and this one happens to be written by some of my favorite authors!
I loved the first book in the Bridal veil Island series, so I had high expectations for this one, and I wasn't disappointed at all! The book kept me turning from page one, and kept me guessing straight till the very end. The main characters in this book are Melinda and Evan, who met on Bridal Veil Island where Melinda acts as a lady's maid for a very wealthy woman. They've been close for years and have fallen in love with one another, yet Evan keeps holding off on asking Melinda for her hand until he has a more secure job.
When a severe storm hits the Island and cuts off communication, Melinda becomes anxious and decides to travel to the island to check on Evan. While there new opportunities arise and she becomes thrust into island life, and all it entails!
I really enjoyed this book, holding true to their writing form, Peterson and Miller put out a book that is both entertaining and thoughtful. Their characters show a depth and maturity that not many books portray.
I highly recommend this book!!

Mindful of Him

To be perfectly honest, within the first few chapters of this book I was completely disgusted with it.
I don't know if the author was just going with the frame of mind from the times (1950's) or what was behind the thoughts of those first few chapters, but when there were lines like "there were times in my past I sure thought of belting Eileen a couple of good ones. Might have done our relationship a lot of good if I had" or "I know she must have been hard to live with lately. And not many people ever have a run of misfortune like you've already had this year. Even if you did pop her one, I can see why; after all she did slap you."
At this point of the book, had I not received it in order to review I would have put it down. As it was, I did continue on in the book and while the book did get better, I failed to see a change in the attitude towards the "spousal abuse" aspect of the book.
I find it hard to wrap my mind around the idea that a Christian book would try to play abuse off as deserved or understandable.
I"m aware in the story that chances are the main character Rob didn't hit, but "merely" pushed his wife (I say "merely" sarcastically because any abuse, regardless of how "Small" it seems to be is completely and totally wrong and inexcusable. Her abuse of him, inexcusable, and his abuse of her is also.) but I struggle to move past the part where the characters in the story are continually trying to excuse it away, or worse insinuating that abuse would have made their relationship better.
Really the one redeeming quality of the book that I could point out was the level of remorse that the main character Rob felt afterwards. At the very least he didn't try to excuse his behavior or justify it, and that can be seen as a bit commendable.
In all, I cannot with a good conscience recommend this book, I find the ideas regarding abuse in it appalling and the defense towards abuse inexcusable. I rarely give out a negative review on a book, and I struggled to do so this time as well. However I can't recommend or "Get behind" a book such as this.

The Gifted

Gifted, The, Ann H. Gabhart, 978-0-8007-3455-8

I am finding myself more and more drawn to and loving the Shaker novels that Ann H. Gabhart writes, she peaks my curiousity about the Shakers and provides such a solid description of them that I find myself now recognizing their ways when reading her books. This is only one in a series of books of Gabhart's that I've read and every time I find myself lost in the book and really enjoying it! One thing I appreciate about Gabhart's book is that she doesn't romanticize the Shaker religion and its confines, she presents it as it  is, and shows those who leave it as neither being in the wrong or in the right (just that they are in what's right for them).
This story is focused on Jessamine who after losing her grandmother is brought to the shaker community to be raised by the sisters. As she grows in the shaker ways, she also finds herself inexpliably drawn to the world and all its wonders. After a chance meeting with a stranger her world turns around and she finds herself thrust straight into this world that she's always wondered about. Fantastic book that was absolutely wonderful!

When Hope Blossoms

When Hope Blossoms, Kim Vogel Sawyer, 978-0-7642-0787-7

I've been a long time fan of Kim Vogel Sawyer and am on the constant look out for her books, so I was very happy to receive another one of her books for review! She (Sawyer) always does a great job and this time was also no exception, it was incredibly well written and really draws the reader into the heart of the story. The story focuses on Amy who after losing her husband to an accident moves to a new community to start over and give her children a new start as well. While caring for her three children (one of whom is special needs) two manage to slip away and enter into the neighbor's orchard. This is where we meet Tim Roper, a former member of an old order Mennonite community who after losing family of his own vowed never to return. As we go through the book we see the development of not only friendship between the two but we also see faith restored and growing in them as well. The book was very well written and quite encouraging. I very much enjoyed this story!

Rare Earth

Rare Earth, Davis Bunn, 978-0-7642-0906-2

I read "Lion of Babylon" by this author and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was (I had figured this would be more of a guy's kind of book, full of fights and action, but little on suspense and thoughtfulness. This was not the case, it was a great book, one I've read over and over again). So I was more than happy to read another book by this author! I have to say that I was quite happy to see that this book was just as good if not better than the last.
The book focuses around Marc Royce who we met in Bunn's first book (Lion of Babylon) as he goes into Kenya to audit a relief organization. Using this as a cover he looks into the minerals (called rare earths) that are raising political tension to an extreme amount. As he sends his reports back to Washington Royce also takes the risk to do something about the squalor and utter chaos that surrounds the communities involved. One thing I absolutely love about this book (and the first one) was that Bunn wrote his character with so much integrity and kindness. While he (Royce) is not afraid to get into the muck and fight, he's also a man of his word, and a man of faith and action. I really enjoyed this book and because it does have those "manly" elements in it I'm happy too to be able to pass it along to my husband who I know will also enjoy it!

Inescapable

Inescapable, Nancy Mehl, 978-0-7642-0927-7

This book combined my two favorite genre's (Amish/old style Mennonite with Suspense) and it made for an absolutely fantastic book. I give plenty of positive reviews, its not hard to make me happy when reading, however if I could only have one fiction book with me It'd be this one. The story had so many turns and mysteries throughout it that it held my attention without distraction through the entire book.
Lizzie Engle left home at a young age to raise her daughter away from the strict and angry Mennonite order that was controlling her life and treating her (and her daughter) poorly. As Lizzie worked her way up after leaving home, she finds herself in a job she loves, but that is precariously balanced on the shoulders of a woman who dislikes her and is looking to get rid of her. After being falsely accused and having been harassed by a stalker she feels that she has no choice but to return home and go into hiding in order to save herself and her daughter.
The book was really well written, I  loved how descriptive it was of the Mennonite community of Kingdom that Lizzie came from, and how it really helped grow the readers imagination when learning about and reading about the different traditions that held this community.
Highly recommend this book!

The Deposit Slip

Deposit Slip, The, Todd M. Johnson, 978-0-7642-0986-4

I adored this book, it was very fast paced with plenty of twists and turns to it that kept me interested throughout the entire book. I really enjoy a good legal suspense novel and this one fit well into what I was expecting. (It very much reminded me of a Randy Singer type book, it had the same flow and readability)
At first glance the book looked like a typical legal drama type book, and I had figured it would have a few predictable twists and turns throughout it. But that idea was quickly dispelled and the story pulled me in! The book is based around Erin Larson, who discovers a deposit slip for 10 million dollars in her (deceased) father's deposit box. After fights with the bank, and losing her previous lawyer to legal threats, she turns to Jared Neaton as a last chance to find out where the money is and where it's come from.
The book had a quick paced flow to it, and I found myself struggling to put it down from the very first page. I will highly recommend this book, and will be seeking out any new ones by this author as well!

The Director's Cut

Director's Cut, The, Janice Thompson, 978-0-8007-3347-6

Again, Janice Thompson is an author that I've read plenty of books from and have really enjoyed her writing style, so I was pretty excited to see a book by her up for review! The Director's cut was exactly the type of book I was expecting from her, with quirky characters (and plenty of familiar ones too!! Love it when there's characters from previous books in new books, it gives it a sense of home coming!) and such an outrageous sense of humor and writing style. It was impossible to not love this book! Par for the course, Thompson's leads (of the female kind) in this book were strong women with strong opinions and distinct personalities. The storyline ranged from outright hilariousness to thought-provoking moments. That's one thing I've found typical of Janice Thompson's novels, that you can't really pin down what will come next in the story, there's such imagination and flow to her stories that they keeping you going till the very last page. I really liked this book, and am looking forward to finding some more of this series!

Waiting for Sunrise

Waiting for Sunrise, Eva Marie Everson, 978-0-8007-3437-4

When I first started this book, it had a feeling of the familiar and something that I felt I could almost recall, So I looked up the author and found that she'd written a few other books that I've reviewed, and most specifically a book called "this fine life" that I've read probably a half dozen times. Her writing style is so unique and has an easy laid back feeling to it, while at the same time presents an intelligent well thought out story. So I was pretty stoked once I realized who wrote the book, I loved her previous ones and this one wasn't an exception!!
There are time that I don't overly enjoy a novel that deals with the harsher realities, I find them a little too depressing and generally read a book to get lost in a good story rather than read about the "real life" type problems. However with the way Everson wrote this book, and the way the story was shown, although it dealt with some strong emotions and some heavy topics it was an absolutely amazing book. I'm sure this'll be another one of those books that will be read and reread throughout the years!

Touching the Sky

Touching the Sky, Tracie Peterson, 978-0-7642-0616-0

One of my absolute favorite things is receiving review books that are part of a series, I love the continuation of these stories and recognizing different characters or situations/areas! I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, I love reading about history, and love to get lost in a good historical story! I also love reading about the rich history and strong conflicts of the civil war era, at a time that has so much turmoil and passion, its hard not to be intrigued with it!
Again, (and this seems to be a theme with all the review books lately!) the author here (Tracie Peterson, who I love reading books from, I've been a long time fan of hers!!) portrayed the female lead as a strong intelligent woman (and although there were some rather flaky characters, they did fit into the times that the book was written about. In an era where women were not supposed to have a thought outside of their home, and family) So I really did enjoy reading this!
There was plenty of suspense throughout the book and and was written so well that at time I'd find myself getting angry at the "bad guys" type characters in it!
I highly recommend this book! Excellent book and an excellent series too!

Love in Disguise

Love in Disguise, Carol Cox, 978-0-7642-0955-0

This was an adorable book! The lead female character Ellie Moore was quirky and funny, but still was portrayed as a strong and intelligent woman (something I love about the more recent history/romance novels lately!) The idea behind the book was very unique to have a woman joining in (especially in that era) with an Private detecting/investigative company and something that I'd not read about before! The entire story had so many twists and turns that I had a little bit of difficulty keeping up with all of them, (if I had to complain, that'd be my only one!) however it also kept my attention throughout the book and kept me guessing straight till the end of the book! (and I totally did not suspect the actual suspects!)
I would of course highly recommend this book, very well written and easy to read!

Short-Straw Bride

Short-Straw Bride, Karen Witemeyer, 978-0-7642-0965-9

You know, when I first started reading this book I had thought it was going to be one of those "Man comes along to rescue the helpless female from herself"... type of books, and was not prepared to enjoy it! Surprisingly though, this book turned out to be completely opposite, the lead female was a strong, opinionated and determined woman who didn't depend upon the lead male character "save her". I love books that allow women to be shown as more than a simpering silly girl! So I absolutely adored this book, it was well written, the characters were nicely developed and had such great personalities that you couldn't help but like them! While the book was obviously a Christian book, it wasn't overtly preachy but still held a strong Christian message which I really appreciated. These are the type of books I'll recommend to my unsaved friends, something that can get them into The Word a bit, but without them feeling forced fed it!
I very much recommend this book!

The Way: New Living Translation

The Way, Softcover

One of my favorite things is to receive a Bible for review, I love reading the different versions out there and reading the different study guides/devotionals in them. I find that I'm able to get a deeper understanding of God's Word when I can look up what it says in all the different versions.
One of the things I very much like about this Bible is the modern/youthful look to the Bible, and that the devotionals seem to be geared towards a younger generation. I think with both the look to the Bible and the devotionals in it, it'll attract more of a younger reader (I would think a Youth/Young adult would be drawn to something like this)
Also I appreciate the language of both the Scripture and the devotionals. It's straight forward and to the point. The book intros are simple introductions to the books without any build up or religious jargon. It simply presents the info about the book in a not forceful/intimidating way. The same goes for the devotionals, they focus on today's kind of problems and situations and have a more "authentic" feel to them. They writers of the devotions aren't trying to impress you with flowery words or religious speak, but are simply trying to help the readers develop a deeper relationship with Christ.
I highly recommend this book (in fact, I like it so much I'm recommending it to our church as a type of Bible we could give away to visitors that are without one)

Love does

"You don’t need another Christian message or a self-help book. You need to have your paradigms about the world shifted into truth" I love the description of this book, it so nicely and fully explains in one sentence what this book is about!
I think the thing I loved the most about "Love does" was how Bob Goff would pair of these real life stories with the lessons he's learned. So we were able to catch a glimpse of how the lesson's he gives are applicable to our lives and our walk. I find it so much easier to understand and remember a lesson when I can see a way to apply it to my life when reading it.
Also I really appreciate that the author was willing to go where many authors are not, and to just come right out and tell his readers to  "leave all of the comparisons and all of the trappings and all of the pretending of religion".... "for me, it's Jesus plus nothing"
Out of everything that Goff said, that is what has stuck with me the most, that we need to leave behind the pretending, and just have Jesus. Its such a simple concept but one that is sorely lacking in many Christians today!
In all, I do highly recommend this book, its quite challenging, but its got enough "entertainment" (For lack of a better word) that you won't find yourself loosing attention.

Brush of Angel's wings

I love Amish books, so this one was a no brainer for me, of course I was going to sign up to review it! This book was actually quite different from the other types of Amish books I've read, while it had the same "Plain" life style portrayed it also showed a much strong view of the Spiritual world. I really quite enjoyed this book, it was very simply written which made it very easy to follow and get "lost" in! The story revolves mostly around Rachel, who stepped in to fill her dead brother's shoes and started taking on the more "manly" chores associated with the Amish lifestyle. When a stranger comes and starts stepping into her self-appointed place Rachel starts feeling pushed out and lost. Throughout the book there are tons of plot twists and turns that keep the reader going till the last page. I very much enjoyed this book!!

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Hiking through

Hiking Through, Paul Stutzman, 978-0-8007-2053-7

I'm a big fan of reading real-life stories, I enjoy seeing how God works in them and through others to bring peace, love and courage into their lives.  I especially love it when God calls them to do something out of the ordinary and love seeing the heights that God leads them to when they follow His will! Its such an encouragement to read!
The author Paul is faced with a heart wrenching reality when he loses his wife to cancer (normally I avoid books such as these that deal with losing people to cancer or other facing cancer. In our day and age I don't think there's anyone out there that hasn't had this horrible disease touch them in some way. These books tend to be depressing to me, even when they're meant for encouragement, so usually I don't like to read them. However I'm glad that I read this book, it was really encouraging to see the author being held up by God, and seeing God's hand in his "recovery" so to speak, and how God brings him to a place of peace and purpose.) He (Paul) feels a leading/tug to get on the Appalachian trail and trusts God enough to set out on this journey set before him. Throughout the book we can see God's hand both comforting the author but also using him to bring help/comfort to others. This book was great, very well written and easy to read. Even though it dealt with sad situations, it was still such an encouraging book that is well worth reading! I very much would recommend this book!

The Pursuit of Lucy Banning

Pursuit of Lucy Banning, The, Olivia Newport, 978-0-8007-2038-4

I'll admit when I saw the title I thought this would just be a run of the mill typical romance story of a woman faced with the old fashioned dilemma of deciding who to marry. I'm so glad that I was completely wrong! I love books that have strong female lead characters (so many fictional historical books tend to leave them out!) that don't conform to the standards of the day, but choose to step out into their calling in spite of what people might thing. This book fit right into that, the main Character Lucy was kind and humble, but also had a back bone and was unwilling to sit back and have her life dictated to her! Lucy struggles to keep hidden her "Secret life" from her family and future husband, while at the same time desiring to break free from the mold that others are trying to force upon her.
This book was quite well written and very enjoyable, I'd highly recommend it to any fiction-lovers out there!!

Dream

Dream, Dutch Sheets, 978-0-7642-0947-5

I was Thrilled at finding out that we were reviewing a book by Dutch Sheets, I absolutely love many of his books and have a really high respect for him. And true to form, this book was incredibly thought provoking and full of challenges and encouragement! One thing I really enjoy about Dutch Sheets is that his books challenge the reader without trying to guilt them into living by the letter of the book. His style is straight forward and very easy to apply to one's life!
I think the older we get we tend to lose sight of our dreams, or begin to find discouragement of them becoming fulfilled. We tend to let life pass us by when we need to be reaching out for what God has in store for us. I loved the message in this book, that God has plans for us and when we stop seeking earthly approval and start setting our sights on God's approval that, that is when are dreams start coming to light! This book was such a strong encouragement to me, I loved reading the stories in it that gave practical application to what he wrote about. I love it when authors include real life examples to help explain what they've written. It makes things seem more realistic and reachable to me!
I highly recommend this book, and will be buying a copy for our church's library!

Travelers rest

Travelers Rest, Ann Tatlock, 978-0-7642-0810-2

An absolutely fantastic read, the kind of book that shows the strength of someone's character and encourages you along the way as well! This was one of my favorite books, the story was very thought provoking and heart wrenching. The characters were so well written I found myself cheering them on through out the story, they were so developed that they felt very realistic!
The main character Jane is put in a very difficult situation when her fiance is injured oversea's, through it she struggles to not only help him, but also come to terms with why it would happen and what the future may hold. Throughout the story she meets up with other people who help her to find her way back into the light.
This was a wonderful book, while it was very serious, it didn't have that "downer" type feel to it that many dramatic books sometimes fall into. While it dealt with some heavy subject matter, it was still very easy to read and very enjoyable to read. I imagine this will become one of the well worn books on my book shelf!
I Highly recommend it!

Submerged

Submerged, Dani Pettrey, 978-0-7642-0982-6

Now this is the kind of book that I love to read, full of suspense and strong characters that have distinct personalities and are easy to like! I loved this book, it was really fast paced, I was actually up till about 2am trying to get to the end of the book, since I knew I wouldn't be sleeping till I found out the ending, lol. Its one of those books that once you start reading it you struggle to set it down!
The story centers around Bailey who grew up in Yancey Alaska and made a rather bad name for herself when she was there. After striking out on her own, she came into a relationship with Christ and cleaned up her act, hoping to never step foot into Yancey again! However when some unforeseen events happen Bailey is forced to face her past, and confront some ghosts as she comes to the knowledge of Christ's changing power, and that she is a new creation. Aside from that she's also faced with some big mysteries and some harrowing events that leave the reader eager to read more! This writer reminds me a lot of Randy Singer (who happens to be one of my favorite authors!) and the suspense mixed in with romance type writing style. I will definitely be seeking out books by this author!

My stubborn heart

My Stubborn Heart, Becky Wade, 978-0-7642-0974-1

I'm honestly kind of torn about this book, on one hand I greatly dislike corny romance novels, and this easily fits into that category, so at the beginning of the book I was rather turned off. However, this author is hilarious, and she has such great timing when it comes to putting humor in her book, that I found myself enjoying this book in spite of it being a typical romance novel!
The story is basically focusing on Kate a social worker who's a bit disillusioned at her job, and Matt a former NHL hockey player who quit playing when he lost his wife. The two meet and fall hard for each other, but fight against it to try and stop the hurt that they've previously felt from coming back.
If you're into romance books I can easily see someone enjoying this immensely, it was a well written book. And for those of us who aren't into it, although there are some eye-rolling moments, it was still a really funny book and one that I'm glad I read!
I'd recommend this one to a least a few of you out there!

Empty Promises: The Truth About You, Your Desires, and the Lies You've Believed -
        By: Pete Wilson

I don't think I've ever read a book that I've loved as much and hated as much as this one. What the author Pete Wilson speaks about in his book convicted me like crazy. I (like many out there) got caught up on being more, on having more. I needed to be better looking, I needed to have more items, I needed to be better than others. I had this need to be on top, to be the best out there, and it wasn't even a need that I was fully aware of. As a Pastor's Wife, I tend to follow the stereotypical thought that I need to be the best, the most loving, the most giving, the one in church who doesn't have issues, who doesn't fall short.
Throughout the book I was able to pinpoint instances where I had the same feelings that the author was describing. Now I've read books and heard speakers who tell us that we need to move beyond those needs, but they seem to rarely give us the tools to actually move past, they've pointed out the problems but have never given a solution. I was so thankful to the author that instead of just pointing out these area's in our lives where we're holding on to these "empty promises" he also gives Biblical tools on how to move beyond this. I also appreciated very much how he showed his own personal struggles in his book, I'm the type of person who will very rarely take advice from those who haven't been where I've walked, who don't know what I've gone through. So I appreciated his personal approach to this, by showing that he's had these struggles, that he's come against the same feelings as the rest of us, and then he goes on to give a Biblical approach on how to get past them.
I love this book, and am planning on ordering the Bible Study kit to do with our church. There are so many times where we claim a book "changed our lives", this isn't one of those books. Reading this didn't change my life, it instead has put me on a continuous journey in getting to know my Creator better and getting to know what my walk with Him should be. I highly recommend this book.

Anything: the prayer that unlocked God and my soul

Anything: The Prayer That Unlocked My God and My Soul -
        By: Jennie Allen

The idea of surrendering all to God is nothing new, there are plenty of books out there that speak for hundreds of pages on it. So when I got this book in the mail I wasn't expecting to read much more than what we've already seen in so many other books. And while some of it was the same type of ideas the author at the same time was able to lead us on her journey through "Anything".  There were so many instances that Jennie Allen presented, and so many desires/wants that she shared that mirrored my own, there were times where should could have been speaking on my life. So many times these types of books are almost a way for the author to share just how fantastic they are and how wonderful they are to have come up with this "new" concept. I honestly did not get that impression from Allen's book, while she shared how her life (and more specifically her spiritual life) changed once she prayed to God that she would do anything, it wasn't in a boastful way. It was simply to share her heart and encourage her readers to move into this complete and fully surrendering relationship with God.
I've recommended this book a lot to our ladies groups, but also I've been encouraging families to really get into reading parts of this together. Its such a simple concept that will completely change your world and your relationship with Jesus.
